Where defects are detected, drivers are informed and advised to attend to the issue. They are able to have the vehicle retested afterwards.

“Ensuring your vehicle is roadworthy before taking any trip, especially over peak times and popular travel holidays like Easter, can help identify critical issues and save lives. Vehicle fitness is crucial, along with responsible driving behaviour.

“The vehicle checks are free and will only cost you some time to get it done. We want to make sure everyone gets where they want to be safely and back again,” said Cape Town Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith.

Operation Exodus venues are Joe Gqabi, Bellville, Cape Town station and the Intercape Bus Depot.

Bust nets R50-million worth of Tik

Cops achieve major success

THE confiscation of crystal meth worth R50-million and smashing a major hijacking syndicate are just two of the recent successes of the SA Police Service’s (SAPS) Operation Shanela.

In the past week 13 633 suspects were arrested through this multidisciplinary operation.

“With high visibility patrols, stop and searches and the tracing of wanted suspects, we are hard at work in stamping the authority of the state,” SAPS said in a statement.

During a massive drug bust R50-million worth of crystal meth, more commonly known as Tik, were confiscated in Aliwal North in the Eastern Cape.

Another major success was the interception of a truck and car hijacking syndicate in which four suspects were arrested. In this case, numerous truck trailers, vehicle parts, heavy-duty machinery, forklifts, and copper plates all valued at R10 million were discovered at a farm in Ventersdorp in the North West.

In other arrests across the country a total of 137 suspects were arrested for murder, with the majority of these in KwaZulu-Natal (32).

Additionally, 259 suspects were arrested for rape, 95 of the arrests were made in KwaZulu-Natal and 220 drug dealers were arrested in the past week with the majority of these in the Western Cape (57).

Kieswetter announced during the briefing a preliminary gross revenue collection of some R2.3 trillion as at the end of March, representing a year-on-year growth of 6.9%.

Preliminary net revenue results totalled R1.855 trillion with refunds totalling some R447.7 billion.

“Net revenue of R1.8551 trillion is a growth of R114 billion higher, a growth of 6.6% against the prior year and exceeds the revised estimate by R8.8 billion. Which is, we believe in the current environment, a very credible outcome delivered by SARS,” he said.

Bur Grade 7 learners remain a concern

School applications roll in

WITH the applications-window for school enrolment now at its halfway point, 116 466 learners have already applied at schools in the Western Cape.

But there is some concern, because at this point the parents of over 33 000 learners currently in Grade 7 in the Western Cape have not yet applied for a place in Grade 8 for 2026, according to the Western Cape Education Department (WCED).

The WCED said primary schools have been asked to contact the parents to remind them to apply. Schools were also asked to add a note about applications to their end-of-term communications to parents last week.

“We appeal to these parents to apply before the admissions window for 2026 closes on 15 April 2025. They can do so online, at their district office, or at one of our pop-up admissions sites for in-person assistance. We encourage parents to bring all the necessary supporting documentation with them when seeking assistance in person.

“The admissions system, as well as background information and step-by-step guides on how to apply, are available here: https://www.westerncape.gov.za/education/service/learner-admissions

“As of 28 March 2025, we have already received Grade R, 1 or 8 applications for116 466 learners and we thank their parents for making sure that they have applied on time,” said the WCED
