Police make several looting arrests
The South African Police Service (SAPS) made several arrests since the early hours of Tuesday morning, 30 June 2026 in connection with incidents of looting and attempted looting reported in parts of the country.

The Ministry of Police has confirmed the arrests and said that while policing operations have been effective thus far, with demonstrations remaining largely peaceful across the country, police have responded to isolated incidents of looting and attempted looting.
Police remain on high alert, with heightened deployments in place to ensure public safety, protect businesses and critical infrastructure, and maintain law and order. Members deployed across the country have been instructed to act swiftly and decisively against anyone who engages in criminal activities, including looting, attempted looting, public violence, malicious damage to property, intimidation, or any other unlawful conduct.
The Acting Minister of Police, Mr Firoz Cachalia, urged citizens to exercise their constitutional rights responsibly and to ensure that demonstrations remain peaceful and lawful.
“Those who choose to exploit the marches to commit criminal acts will face the full might of the law,” said the Minister.
Cape Town Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis said by 14:00 there were no major disruptions in Cape Town.

The City said marchers who gathered outside the provincial legislature in the City Centre earlier on Tuesday, 30 June 2026 have started moving out of the area. A second group has gathered outside St. George’s Cathedral.
The City said two groups of people marching in Kraaifontein converged on the police station in the area to hand over a memorandum to SAPS. Upon dispersing, sections of the crowd became riotous, and a stun grenade was discharged to restore order.
Services are also present in Delft, where a group looted a shop in Main Road. We are awaiting further details from SAPS about arrests made in connection with that incident.
