Police attacked at murder scene
UPDATE! The South African Police Service (SAPS) have registered more cases for investigation: attack on police, attempted murder and malicious damage to property. SAPS said the windscreen, roof, left rear passenger door and bonnet were damaged during to the double cab police vehicle.
CRIME SCENE: St Montague Village, Cape Town: Steenberg police members came under attack on Thursday night, 24 September 2026 while responding to multiple shooting incidents here.
According to a media liaison officer for the Western Cape police, Captain FC Van Wyk, police members responded to multiple shooting incidents at about 23:00 in St Boniface Street, St Montague Village, Lavender Hill, and when they arrived, found the street barricaded.
“A group of unidentified community members started stoning the police officials and their vehicles, while some were also shooting at the police.
“The situation escalated and members were exposed to an immediate threat to their safety and took action to disperse the crowd.
“Additional resources were requested to assist in containing the situation and securing the area. Members of Public Order Policing, Anti-Gang Unit, Flying Squad and Operation Prosper responded and assisted in securing the scene.
“On the scene the members found a 47-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds to his body and declared deceased by the paramedics. No injuries were sustained by police members or the public,” said Van Wyk
Steenberg police registered a murder case. The motive is believed to be gang related.
The Steenberg Community Police Forum (C{F) has strongly condemned the attack on the SAPS members.
The CPF said in a statement: “This is completely unacceptable. This means one less van available to respond to your emergency, patrol your streets and protect your community.
“We stand firmly behind the affected SAPS members and condemn any attempt to obstruct, intimidate or attack those who are there to serve and protect our communities.”

Police killings: Suspect dies in shootout
CRIME SCENE: Inanda, KwaZulu-Natal: A suspect wanted for the killing of two Crime Intelligence officers has been shot and killed in a shootout with police at Emaplasini, Inanda.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) five of the deceased’s accomplices were arrested during an operation in various areas of KwaZulu-Natal on Friday morning, 25 September 2026.
The two officers, Captain Louis Nel and Sergeant Mandla Khuzwayo, were ambushed in Mount Edgecombe in April 2026 and soon after the incident a prosecutorial-guided investigation was launched, said SAPS.
“In the early hours of Friday morning, an intelligence-led multidisciplinary operation was conducted. Five suspects were arrested in Pinetown, Amanzimtoti, Mandeni and Newlands West.
“The sixth suspect refused to obey police instructions and was shooting from inside a house for about three hours. Negotiations went on until he released his girlfriend, who was also inside the house.
“The suspect was eventually shot and fatally wounded during the operation, and a Special Task Force officer was shot in the hand but is in good spirits after receiving first aid medical attention,” said SAPS.
The arrested suspects are expected to appear in court on Monday, 28 September 2026.
Suspect also arrested for illegally dealing in dagga
Liquor seized at unlicensed premises
CRIME SCENE: Mfuleni, Cape Town: Two suspects have been arrested for dealing in liquor without a license and the possession of dagga on Wednesday, 23 September 2026.
A joint operation was held between Operation Prosper, Kleinvlei SAPS and Mfuleni Crime Prevention Unit.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) information was followed up of alleged irregularities at a premises in Sizakhele Street, Mfuleni.
“Upon their arrival at the premises SAPS members conducted a search and confiscated an undisclosed amount of liquor. A 43-year-old suspect was arrested for dealing in liquor without a license and detained at Mfuleni police station,” said SAPS.
Later in the day Operation Prosper and Kraaifontein police arrested a 27-year-old man at a premises at Nobongile Street, Walacedene, Kraaifontein on a charge of dealing in dagga. The suspect was allegedly found in possession of 120 dagga sachets.
During the same operation, the members of Kraaifontein police arrested a 29-year-old male at a premises in Nobongile Street, Walacedene, for the possession of seven plastic bags of dagga.
140 guns seized during compliance inspection
Security boss nabbed on Firearms Act
CRIME SCENE: Mthatha, Eastern Cape: A 60-year-old businessman from Mthatha has been arrested for alleged contravention of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000.
The businessman was allegedly found in possession of a company firearm without the required permit., following a compliance inspection conducted by the South African Police Service (SAPS) earlier this week at the head office of his security company.
The inspection was conducted by Operation Buyisa, who, according to SAPS, established that firearms registered in the name of the security company were not accounted for in the company’s stock register.
“A total of 140 firearms were seized, while a further 135 firearms remained unaccounted for,” said SAPS.
The businessman was out on bail in connection with an attempted murder case involving a police official in July 2026. It is alleged that the suspect discharged a firearm inside a tent during a traditional occasion, resulting in an off-duty police official sustaining a gunshot wound.
The accused is expected to appear before the Mthatha Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 29 September 2026, for a formal bail application following this week’s compliance inspection.
“The seized firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing to establish whether any of them may have been used in the commission of other serious and violent crimes.
“SAPS continues to conduct compliance inspections as part of efforts to ensure strict adherence to the Firearms Control Act and to prevent the proliferation and unlawful use of firearms.”
