Man found napping behind wheel, causing traffic blockade
Drunk driver nabbed in his sleep
CRIME SCENE: N2 Highway, Cape Town: An alleged drunk driver couldn’t keep his vehicle going as he fell asleep behind the wheel, causing a traffic blockade.
According to the City of Cape Town’s media office, Metro Police officers investigating the vehicle blocking a lane, found the driver fast asleep.
After waking him, his speech was allegedly slurred and smelt of alcohol.
The driver was found at 13:40 on Saturday, 29 August 2026, at the on-ramp to Jakes Gerwel Drive from the N2.
“He was blocking the right turn lane and was arrested for driving under the influence.
“It is shocking to think the driver was so inebriated he couldn’t keep his vehicle going or stay awake behind the wheel. Driving drunk puts lives at risk and shatters families. He was arrested before that happened.
“The safety of our residents will not be compromised within our Metro,” said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith.
Later the same day, Metro Police officers recovered a vehicle hijacked in Khayelitsha in less than 30 minutes after the owner was held at gunpoint.
In total 407 people were arrested by City enforcement departments last week. The City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre (PECC) recorded 2 914 calls for assistance over the weekend.
Emergency call takers also logged 197 cases of physical assault, 71 domestic violence incidents and 151 vehicle and pedestrian road accidents.

Woman follows husband to jail
CRIME SCENE: Mankweng, Limpopo: A woman spent the weekend behind bars, not far from where her husband was being held, after she allegedly tried to buy her man a get out of jail card.
The 53-year-old allegedly approached a Constable attached to Polokwane Public Order Policing (POPS) on Saturday, 29 August 2026, at about 21:30
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Constable was busy writing up a docket in the Mankweng Community Service Centre (CSC) when the woman, from Zone 1 Extension in Seshego, arrived there.
“The woman allegedly offered the member R4 000 in exchange for the release of her husband, who was in police custody in connection with a charge of dealing in dagga.
“The Constable did not solicit, request or accept the money and warned the suspect that her conduct was unlawful. Despite the warning, the suspect allegedly removed the cash from her pocket and forcefully placed it into the Constable’s hands.
“The member immediately apprehended the suspect for bribery,” said SAPS.
The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, has commended the member for his integrity and professionalism in refusing to be compromised and for upholding the law.

Volgens die Suid-Afrikaanse Polisiediens (SAPD) het die Citrusdal-polisie Saterdag, 28 Augustus 2026 omstreeks 01:30 inligting ontvang oor ongelisensieerde vuurwapens en ammunisie wat by Park 55, Citrusdal, gehou word.
“Hulle het onmiddellik na die verdagte se adres gegaan en ‘n deeglike deursoeking gedoen. Die polisie het twee ongelisensieerde vuurwapens en ‘n totaal van 149 rondtes van verskillende kaliber ammunisie gevind. ‘n 39-jarige man is gearresteer vir die besit van ongelisensieerde vuurwapens en die onwettige besit van ammunisie,” het die SAPD gesê.

CRIME SCENE: Citrusdal, Cederberg: A tip-off in the early morning hours of Saturday, 28 August 2026 led to two illegal firearms being recovered and a middle-aged man arrested.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) the Citrusdal police received information at about 01:30 about unlicensed firearms and ammunition being kept at Park 55, Citrusdal.
“They immediately went to the suspect’s address and conducted a thorough search. Police found two unlicensed firearms and a total of 149 rounds of various calibre ammunition. A 39-year-old male suspect was arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and illegal possession of ammunition,” said SAPS.

MISDAADTONEEL: Heideveld, Kaapstad: Die Suid-Afrikaanse Polisiediens (SAPD) het ‘n ou mammie gearesteere vir die besit van ‘n klomp dwelms.
Volgens die SAPD het lede van die Openbare Orde-eenheid Maandag-oggend, 31 Augustus 2026 inligting oor dwelms by ‘n perseel in Buffelshoek-straat, Heideveld, opgevolg.
“Hulle het die perseel deursoek en ‘n verskeidenheid dwelms, insluitend Mandrax-tablette, Tik, heroïen en kokaïen, in die huis gevind. ‘n 54-jarige vrou is gearresteer vir die besit van dwelms.
“Diie verdagte verskyn binnekort in die Athlone-landdroshof,” sê die polisie.

CRIME SCENE: Cape Town: The South African Police Service’s (SAPS) crackdown on gangs, drugs and illegal firearms continued unabatedly this week with four arrests and three guns confiscated.
Atlantis: A 29-year-old man from Atlantis was arrested on Thursday, 27 August 2026 after the discovery of a firearm and ammunition at his house.
The police followed up on information about suspected gang-related activities in Bosanger Street, Robinvale, Atlantis at approximately 06:20. A search was conducted and a firearm with five rounds of ammunition was found.
Wesbank: Police arrested a 25-year-old male suspect for possession of a prohibited firearm and illegal possession of ammunition in Marthinus van Schalkwyk Street at around 19:50 on 27 August 2026.
Hanover Park: Police members attached to Operation Prosper arrested two supects for possession of an unlicensed firearm and illegal possession of ammunition in Hanover Park on 27 August 2026.
“The team executed a search warrant at a house in Lansport Road, Hanover Park, at around 19:00. They found two male suspects, aged 17 and 27-years, and proceeded to search the house. During the search, police recovered a .38 Special revolver with five rounds of ammunition and ten 9mm rounds of ammunition,” said SAPS.

Cop killers get life behind bars
FROM THE COURTS: Three police killers will spend the rest of their lives behind bars.
Mpho Richard Mosia (31), Kabelo Anthony Matasane (29) and Pakiso Lethako (34), a Lesotho national, were convicted by the Free State High Court, for their involvement in the fatal shooting of two police officers, attempted murder, robbery of a service pistol, house robbery, theft of a firearm, illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of ammunition and illegal immigration.
The two police officers, Constable Sipho Mohapi and Constable Gedione Motloung, were fatally shot on Saturday, 4 January 2025 shot while responding to a house robbery in Phuthaditjhaba.
The court sentenced Lethako, Mosia and Matasane on Friday 28 August 2026 to two life sentences each for murder, two life sentences for attempted murder, 15 years’ imprisonment for house robbery and a further 15 years’ imprisonment for robbery of a service pistol.
In addition, Lethako was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment for illegal possession of ammunition, 15 years’ imprisonment for possession of a prohibited firearm, 18 months’ imprisonment for contravention of the Immigration Act and three years’ imprisonment for theft of a firearm.
Mosia was further sentenced to six months’ imprisonment for illegal possession of ammunition and 15 years’ imprisonment for possession of a prohibited firearm.
The Provincial Commissioner of the Free State, Lieutenant General Solly Lesia, and Provincial Head of the Hawks, Major General Mokgadi Bokaba, have applauded the sterling work of Crime Intelligence, the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation, Murder and Robbery Unit, Anti-Gang-Unit and Tactical Response Team, welcomed the lengthy sentences handed down to three accused.

“Die polisie het op inligting gereageer en ‘n huis omstreeks 14:45 by bogenoemde adres deursoek. Tydens die deursoeking het hulle 800 Mandrax-tablette, 1 035 sakkies Tik, 25 rondtes ammunisie en kontant gevind.

Police net drugs in Hawston
CRIME SCENE: Hawston, Overberg: The Western Cape Flying Squad has made a big drug bust in this small fishing village.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) said they arrested three male suspects for dealing in drugs after a raid at a house in Forbes Street on Thursday, 27 August 2026.
“Police acted on intelligence and conducted a search at the mentioned address at about 14:45. During the search, they found 800 mandrax tablets, 1 035 sachets of tik, 25 rounds of ammunition and cash. Three suspects, aged 29, 30 and 44-years, were arrested for dealing in drugs and will appear before the Hermanus Magistrate’s Court.
“Western Cape police remain committed to rooting out drugs from communities,” said SAPS.
Man linked to host of robberies and carjackings
Robber with fake guns arrested
CRIME SCENE: Khayelitsha, Cape Town: Police arrested a 24-year-old man at Eyadini informal settlement on Wednesday, 26 August 2026, following a series of armed street robberies and carjackings in Makhaza and Harare.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) the arrest was a result of a joint operation by members of the Makhaza Anti-Hijacking Team and Harare Crime Intelligence.
“The members followed up on intelligence about a suspect alleged to be involved in the recent street armed robberies and carjackings. Upon arrival at the suspect’s home, a search was conducted, and police recovered two imitation firearms and suspected stolen property,” said SAPS.
