Community assist police to catch armed man
Teamwork pays off in battle against crime
CRIME SCENE: Elsies River, Cape Town: Excellent teamwork between the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the community led to the swift arrest of a 35-year-old armed suspect.

On Tuesday, 21 April 2026 at about 08:30 the Maitland Flying Squad received a complaint of a shooting in progress in Avonwood, Elsies River.
They responded quickly and when they arrived in the area, members of the community pointed them in the direction the suspect ran. The suspect was apprehended shortly thereafter and a 9mm Taurus pistol with five rounds of ammunition was found in his possession.
He was detained at the Elsies River police station for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, and will appear in the Goodwood Magistrates’ Court once charged.
The police have appealed to the public to report any criminal activities on the MySAPS app anonymously or call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
