Flying squad clips robbers’ wings

CRIME SCENE: Lansdowne, Cape Town: Four suspected armed robbery suspects are behind bars following the quick intervention of the Maitland Flying Squad.

On Monday, 1 June 2026, the Flying Squad responded to a business robbery in Lansdowne.

At around 22:00, they spotted a motor vehicle fitting the description of the vehicle that was allegedly used in the robbery.

The police managed to stop the vehicle and found three suspects inside. They, in turn, led the police to a fourth suspect, where 13 speed point machines, 10 cellular telephones, one gas revolver, a pistol and cash were discovered. 

Ottery: In another incident, the Squad were patrolling around Ottery Flats on Monday 1 June 2026 when they spotted a suspicious male wearing an orange top.

He attempted to flee but members pursued him on foot and he was apprehended in Daniel Avenue.

“The members searched the suspect and seized a 9mm pistol with 28 rounds of ammunition. The firearm was reported lost at Elsburg SAPS in Germiston, Gauteng in June 2022. The gang-affiliated male suspect was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of ammunition and possession of stolen property,” said Constable Ndakhe Gwala of the Western Cape police media office.

Teamwork pays off in battle against crime

CRIME SCENE: Elsies River, Cape Town: Excellent teamwork between the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the community led to the swift arrest of a 35-year-old armed suspect.

On Tuesday, 21 April 2026 at about 08:30 the Maitland Flying Squad received a complaint of a shooting in progress in Avonwood, Elsies River.

They responded quickly and when they arrived in the area, members of the community pointed them in the direction the suspect ran. The suspect was apprehended shortly thereafter and a 9mm Taurus pistol with five rounds of ammunition was found in his possession.

He was detained at the Elsies River police station for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, and will appear in the Goodwood Magistrates’ Court once charged.
