SAPS top brass commend detective, prosecutor

26 years for double murder

IN COURT: Mitchells Plain, Cape Town: On Sunday, 20 October 2024 Riedewaan Stemmet and Shuib Abrahams were fatally shot at a house in Korfbal Street, Beacon Valley.

The case was assigned to Detective Constable Theodoric Cloete of the Anti-Gang Unit, who delved into the evidence of the double murder, which led to the arrest Geronimo Jardien. Bail was successfully opposed and Jardien remained in custody for the duration of the trial.

On Monday, 22 June 2026, Jardien was found guilty by the Mitchells Plain Regional Court of this double gang-related murder. The court found that on the day of the murders, Jardien went to the mentioned address where he found Stemmet and Abrahams. He fired several shots, fatally wounding both.

He was sentenced to 26 years’ direct imprisonment and declared unfit to possess a firearm.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) management in the Western Cape welcomed the sentence and commended the investigating officer and the prosecuting team for their role in the successful conviction.
