An intelligence driven operation between the Hawks’ National Priority Violent Crime unit, members from POCC and K9 Unit led to the arrest of the 39 year-old suspect on armed robbery charges on 09 July 2026.

A spokesperson for the Hawks, Lieutenant Colonel Siyabulela Vukub, said on 5 June 2026 an IZI Cash armoured vehicle was driving in Gugulethu after they had loaded cash in the ATM’s at the Gugulethu Mall.

“A Silver Mercedes Benz rammed into the armoured vehicle whereby unknown suspects started shooting it. A white Ford Bantam bakkie with suspects suddenly joined then and alsoopened fire.

“The crew of the cash vehicle, which was riddled by bullets, fired back and they managed to escape to a safe place. No one was injured and no cash was taken. The suspects abandoned both vehicles. Investigations led to the arrest of the suspect after a warrant of arrest was issued.

“He is due to appear at the Athlone Magistrates Court on 13 July 2026,” said Vukub.
