MISDAADTONEEL: Somerset-Wes, Kaapstad: ‘n Hoëspoed-jaagtog op die N2 naby Somerset-Wes het geëindig met die arrestasie van ‘n buitelandse burger op ‘n reeks aanklagte.

Volgens die Suid-Afrikaanse Polisiediens (SAPD) het die arrestasie van die 32-jarige man gevolg ná ‘n misdaad-bestrydingsoperasie deur die Somerset-Wes misdaad-voorkomingseenheid.
Dit het ook gelei tot die ontdekking van ‘n voertuig wat verbind word met verskeie huis rooftogte en verkragting in gebiede soos Kleinmond, Stellenbosch, Table View en Bothasig.
Die drama het begin toe die polisie Woensdag 8 Julie 2026 omstreeks 5:45 ‘n grys Honda BRV, wat met die bogenoemde sake verbind word, op die N2 opgemerk het.
Volgens die SAPD is ‘n poging aangewend om die voertuig te stop, maar die verdagte het teen ‘n hoë spoed op die N2 rigting Kaapstad, weggejaag. Tydens die jaagtog het die polisie gesien hoe twee sakke by die venster uitgegooi word. Hulle het die sakke gevind, gevul met ‘n vuurwapen wat tydens die rooftogte gebruik is en tegnologiese toerusting wat die vorige aand in Bettysbaai naby Kleinmond as gesteel aangemeld is.
Die verdagte is ‘n rukkie daarna vasgetrek en gearresteer vir die besit van ‘n onwettige vuurwapen, besit van gesteelde eiendom, oortreding van die Immigrasiewet, asook roekelose en nalatige bestuur.

Suspect nabbed after high-speed chase
CRIME SCENE: Somerset West, Cape Town: A high-speed chase on the N2 near Somerset West has ended with the arrest of a foreign national on a number of charges.

According to the South African Police Services (SAPS) the arrest of the 32-year-old man followed a crime-combatting operation conducted by the Somerset West Crime Prevention Unit.
It also led to the discovery of a vehicle associated to several house robbery cases and rape in arears such as Kleinmond, Stellenbosch, Table View and Bothasig.
The drama started when police spotted a grey Honda BRV that is linked with the above-mentioned cases on the N2 on Wednesday, 8 July at about 5:45.
According to SAPS an attempt to stop the vehicle was made, but the suspect drove at high speed on the N2, direction Cape Town. During the chase, the police saw him throwing two bags out of the window. The bags were recovered and found to be filled with a firearm used during the robberies and technology equipment which was reported stolen the night before in Betty’s Bay near Kleinmond.
The suspect was eventually caught and apprehended for possession of a prohibited firearm, possession of stolen property, contravention of the immigration act as well as reckless and negligent driving.

‘n Intelligensie-gedrewe operasie deur die Valke, lede van die POCC en die K9-eenheid het gelei tot die arrestasie van die 39-jarige verdagte op Donderdag 9 Julie 2026 op aanklagte van gewapende roof.
‘n Woordvoerder vir die Valke, luitenant-kolonel Siyabulela Vukub, sê ‘n IZI Cash-pantservoertuig het op 5 Junie 2026 in Gugulethu gery nadat personeel kontant in die OTM’e by die Gugulethu-winkelsentrum gelaai het.
“’n Silwer Mercedes-Benz het in die pantservoertuig vasgejaag waarna verdagtes daarop begin skiet het. ‘n Wit Ford Bantam-bakkie het by hulle aangesluit en die insittendes ook met vuurwapens losgebrand.
“Die wagte in die pantservoertuig, wat vol koeëlgate was, het terug geskiet en in die proses daarin geslaag om na ‘n veilige plek te ry. Niemand is beseer nie en geen kontant is gesteel nie.
“Die rowers het albei voertuie agtergelaat. Verdere ondersoeke het gelei tot die arrestasie van die verdagte nadat ‘n lasbrief vir arrestasie uitgereik is,” het Vukub gesê.
Die verdagte verskyn, Maandag, 13 Julie 2026 in die Athlone-landdroshof.

CRIME SCENE: Gugulethu, Cape Town: A suspect has been arrested following a botched cash in transit robbery.

An intelligence driven operation between the Hawks’ National Priority Violent Crime unit, members from POCC and K9 Unit led to the arrest of the 39 year-old suspect on armed robbery charges on 09 July 2026.
A spokesperson for the Hawks, Lieutenant Colonel Siyabulela Vukub, said on 5 June 2026 an IZI Cash armoured vehicle was driving in Gugulethu after they had loaded cash in the ATM’s at the Gugulethu Mall.
“A Silver Mercedes Benz rammed into the armoured vehicle whereby unknown suspects started shooting it. A white Ford Bantam bakkie with suspects suddenly joined then and alsoopened fire.
“The crew of the cash vehicle, which was riddled by bullets, fired back and they managed to escape to a safe place. No one was injured and no cash was taken. The suspects abandoned both vehicles. Investigations led to the arrest of the suspect after a warrant of arrest was issued.
“He is due to appear at the Athlone Magistrates Court on 13 July 2026,” said Vukub.

‘n Skakelbeampte vir die Wes-Kaapse polisie, kaptein FC Van Wyk, sê die Mitchells Plain-polisie het ‘n moordsaak geopen ná die skietvoorval omstreeks 07:00. Die voorval het op die hoeke van Weltevredenweg en Morgensterweg, Westgate gebeur.
“Die 45-jarige slagoffer was alleen in die voertuig, ‘n Hyundai-minibakkie, op pad werk toe ten tyde van die voorval. Hy is verskeie keer getref.
“Die omstandighede rondom die voorval word ondersoek,” het Van Wyk gesê.

Tragedy in morning traffic
CRIME SCENE: Mitchells Plain, Cape Town: A man died tragically early on Thursday morning, 9 July 2026 when he was shot inside his vehicle on his way to work.

A media liaison officer for the Western Cape police, Captain FC Van Wyk, said the Mitchells Plain police registered a murder case following the shooting incident at about 07:00.
The incident happened at the corners of Weltevreden Way and Morgenster Road, Westgate Mitchells Plain.
“At the time of the incident the 45-year-old victim was alone in the vehicle, a Hyundai mini truck and on his way to work. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his body.
“Circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation,” said Van Wyk.

NASIONAAL: Die Suid-Afrikaanse Polisiediens (SAPD) het Donderdag 9 Julie 2026 byna 12 000 vuurwapens en onderdele vernietig.

9 Julie is ook die Internasionale Dag vir die Vernietiging van Klein- en Ligte Wapens soos deur die Verenigde Nasies verklaar.
Volgens die SAPD is 11 859 vuurwapens vernietig tydens ‘n proses wat vandag in Gauteng plaasgevind het, waarvan 9 596 handwapens, 1 102 gewere en 798 haelgewere was.
Die SAPD het gesê 33% van die vuurwapens en vuurwapenonderdele wat vernietig is, is tydens polise-operasies regoor die land gekonfiskeer. Vrywillige inhandigings maak 61% uit, amnestie-vuurwapens 4,54% en geweld teen vroue en kinders 1,22%.
Die SAPD het die afgelope sewe jaar 317 811 vuurwapens vernietig.
Vandag is die eerste vuurwapen-vernietigingsproses vir die 2026/2027-boekjaar.

NATIONAL: The South African Police Service (SAPS) destroyed almost 12 000 firearms and parts on Thursday, 9 July 2026.

July 9 also marks the International Day for the Destruction of Small Arms and Light Weapons as declared by the United Nations.
According to SAPS 11 859 firearms are being destroyed during a process taking place in Gauteng today, of which 9 596 are handguns,1 102 rifles and 798 shotguns.
SAPs said 33% of the firearms and firearm parts that are being destroyed were seized during policing operations across the country. Voluntary surrenders make up 61%, amnesty firearms 4.54% and violence against women and children 1.22%.
SAPS have destroyed 317 811 firearms in the last seven years.
Today marks the first firearm destruction process for the 2026/2027 financial year.

MISDAADTONEEL: Kaapse Vlakte: Sewe mense is dood en ten minste vyf beseer in twee massaskietvoorvalle Woensdagaand, 8 Julie 2026.

In die eerste voorval, wat omstreeks 20:10 op die hoek van Laurastraat en 8ste-laan in Lost City, Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain plaasgevind het, het vyf mans buite ‘n plaaslike spaza winkel gestaan.
Gewapende verdagtes het hulle genader en op hulle losgebrand.
Volgens ‘n skakelbeampte vir die Wes-Kaapse polisie, kolonel Andrè Traut, het drie slagoffers van 18, 19 en 51-jaar-oud, noodlottige skietwonde opgedoen en is op die toneel dood verklaar. Twee ander slagoffers van 17 en 22-jaar-oud, is na ‘n mediese fasiliteit vervoer vir behandeling.
“’n Kort rukkie later, omstreeks 20:30, het die polisie gereageer op ’n skietvoorval by ’n woning in Marcus Garvey, Philippi-Oos, waar sewe mense geskiet is. Vier slagoffers, tussen 17 en 20-jaar-oud, is op die toneel dood, terwyl drie ander in die hospitaal opgeneem is.
“Die omstandighede en motief rondom beide voorvalle word ondersoek,” het Traut gesê.
“Om verdere geweld te voorkom en openbare veiligheid te verbeter, is polisie-ontplooiings in die betrokke gebiede verskerp. Lede sal ’n sigbare teenwoordigheid handhaaf en voortgaan om operasies uit te voer wat daarop gemik is om die gemeenskappe te stabiliseer en die veiligheid van inwoners te verseker.
“Die Wes-Kaapse polisie veroordeel hierdie gewelddadige dade ten sterkste en gaan alles doen omdie verantwoordelikes te vang,” het Traut gesê.
Vroeër is een persoon ook glo dood tydens ’n skietvoorval in Komatiweg, Mfuleni.

Mass shootings claim 7 lives
Night of terror on Cape Flats
CRIME SCENE: Cape Flats: Seven people were killed and at least five injured in two mass shooting incidents on Wednesday night, 8 July 2026.

In the first incident, which occurred at about 20:10 at the corner of Laura Street and 8th Avenue in Lost City, Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain, five men were reportedly standing outside a local tuck shop when they were approached by armed suspects who opened fire on them.
According to a media liaison officer for the Western Cape police, Colonel Andrè Traut, three victims, aged 18, 19 and 51-years, sustained fatal gunshot wounds and were declared deceased at the scene. Two other victims, aged 17 and 22-years, were transported to a medical facility for treatment.
“A short while later, at about 20:30, police responded to a shooting incident at a residence in Marcus Garvey, Philippi East, where seven people were shot. Four victims, aged between 17 and 20-years, died at the scene, while three others were admitted to hospital for medical treatment.
“The circumstances surrounding both incidents are the subject of ongoing investigations,” said Traut.
“To prevent any further violence and enhance public safety, police deployments in the affected areas have been heightened. Members will maintain a visible presence and continue to conduct crime prevention operations aimed at stabilising the communities and ensuring the safety of residents.
“Western Cape police condemn these acts of violence in the strongest possible terms and remain committed to bringing those responsible to justice,” said Traut.
Earlier one person reportedly also died during a shooting incident in Komati Road, Mfuleni.
