Newborn baby dumped like dirt
Waste workers’ grim find
CRIME SCENE: Capricorn, Cape Town: Municipal waste collectors from the City of Cape Town made a shocking discovery on Thursday morning, 27 August 2026 when they found a dead newborn baby in a dirt bin.

Thembakazi Mpendukana, a media liaison officer for the Western Cape police, said the grim discovery was made in Dassie Road, Vrygrond.
“The body of a newborn baby girl was found in a trash bin at around 6:45. An inquest docket has been opened by Muizenberg SAPS for further investigation and no arrest has been made yet,” said Mpendukana.
Ward councillor for the area, Mandy Marr, said neighbourhood safety officers (NSOs) were on the scene and secured the area until the police arrived.
“We appeal to anybody in the community who is pregnant or has had a baby they cannot care for to please contact myself or one of the community leaders. We will assist you in complete confidence,” said Marr.
