ACCIDENT SCENE: Emergency crews were met with gruesome scenes as they responded to a devastating accident on the N1 Highway which claimed the lives of at least 21 people on Sunday night, 13 September 2026.

The accident occurred near Leeu-Gamka in the Western Cape, at approximately 11:30pm and involved two minibus vehicles and a station wagon car.

The N1 is currently closed in both directions. The only available alternative route is via Prince Albert Road Station, along the R407 towards the N12, and then continuing on the N12 towards Beaufort West (approx 200km).

Authorities have warned motorists to avoid the area as they can expect significant delays.

Heavy motor vehicles and long-distance operators have also been asked to stop at the nearest truck stop or town until the N1 is declared safe and reopened.

Emergency teams involved in the response to the crash include Leeu-Gamka and Merweville SAPS, Laingsburg and Beaufort West Provincial Traffic, Fire & Rescue Central Karoo and Metro EMS Central Karoo.
