24-year-old to spend 10 years behind bars
Son sentenced for raping mom, gran
FROM THE COURTS: The Virginia Regional Court has sentenced a 24‑year‑old man to an effective 10 years imprisonment for raping his mother and grandmother in two separate incidents.

The crimes took place in Phomolong, Hennenman, during April and December 2025. Both cases were investigated by the Thabong Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, with Sergeant Moleboheng Molete and Warrant Officer Mia Engelbrecht leading the investigations.
Strong evidence presented in court by the investigators, together with prosecutor Chabane of the National Prosecuting Authority, resulted in the accused entering guilty pleas.
The accused was sentenced to 10 years’ direct imprisonment on the first count. On the second count he received a 15 years imprisonment, with five years suspended. The court ordered that the sentences run concurrently, meaning the accused will serve 10 years in prison.
Lejweleputswa District Commissioner, Major General (Dr) Tholie Afonso, welcomed the ruling, commending the thorough work of the FCS investigators and the prosecution team.
Meanwhile the Ficksburg FCS Unit, working together with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), has secured two life sentences for Kamal Ibrahim (53), a tuck shop owner from Caledon Park near Ficksburg, following his conviction for rape of three minor girls aged 9, 11 and 13 in January 2020.
In January 2020, the accused operated a tuck shop in Caledon Park, where he committed the offences against the three minors. After the incidents, he allegedly gave the victims sweets from his shop in an attempt to keep them silent.
The crimes came to light when one of the victims eventually disclosed the abuse to her parent, who reported the matter to the police.
He was sentenced on Friday, 9 October 2026, by the Bethlehem Regional Court, to two life terms of imprisonment. The cases were investigated by Detective Sergeant Thabiso Kobeli of the Ficksburg FCS Unit.
The Free State Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia, welcomed the sentence and commended the investigating officer and the prosecution team for their dedication in ensuring that justice was served.
Hawks deliver nog blow to allege traffickers
Sex ring suspect behind bars
CRIME SCENE: Rondebosch, Cape Town: The Hawks have arrested a 30‑year‑old woman in connection with a human trafficking case uncovered at a brothel earlier this year.

The suspect was taken into custody on Monday, 12 October 2026 after a warrant of arrest was issued against her. The arrest follows an August search operation led by Hawks’ teams from George and Bellville, working alongside the Department of Home Affairs.
During the August raid, a 21‑year‑old woman was found working as a sex worker. Investigators established that she was a victim of trafficking and rescued her from the premises.
Philip Udogwu, alleged to have trafficked the victim, was arrested in September and remains in custody following his appearance in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court. Authorities believe the female suspect is an accomplice of Udogwu who helped groom the victim into sex work.
'Watertight case' leads to plea bargain with state
Hitman gets 25 years
FROM THE COURTS: A taxi industry hitman has been sentenced to an effective 25 years’ imprisonment by the Johannesburg High Court.

Halulisani Mchunu, 29, was handed the hefty sentence after entering into a formal plea and sentence agreement with the State, pleading guilty to all 26 criminal counts against him.
The court ordered that his sentences for the various charges run concurrently, resulting in the effective 25-year prison term.
Mchunu’s conviction stems from a highly coordinated wave of violent crimes, including targeted assassinations, that fueled a cycle of retribution, route domination, and profit wars within the lucrative South African taxi industry.
However, his criminality extended beyond taxi ranks. In late 2024, a specialized South African Police Service (SAPS) task team—deployed to crack down on a deadly syndicate executing business executives and stealing minerals near the Rio Tinto-owned Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) mine—tracked Mchunu down to Gauteng.
Upon his arrest, police recovered three AK-47 assault rifles and one 9mm semi-automatic pistol.
According to court documents one of the recovered AK-47s directly matched the brutal murder of prominent businessman and RBM contractor Sipho Zwelethemba Masuku, who was gunned down inside his Toyota Fortuner in Meerensee, Richards Bay.
Brigadier Paulina Sekgobela, the Acting Provincial Head for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (the Hawks), has praised the seasoned investigation team and the prosecuting authority.
She noted that the “watertight case” left Mchunu with absolutely no room to maneuver, forcing the hitman to concede to his crimes in their entirety.
“This conviction sends a clear and unambiguous message to those involved in taxi-related violence,” SAPS said in a statement.
