Vigilant police arrest two suspects
Assault rifles found near mall
CRIME SCENE: Jakes Gerwel Drive, Cape Town: Two men were arrested after vigilant South African Police Service (SAPS) members found three fully automatic assault rifles in their possession.

The discovery came when members of the Western Cape National Intervention Unit (NIU) were deployed following unrest at Siqalo informal settlement near Mitchells Plain on Thursday, 25 June 2026.
“While patrolling on Jakes Gerwel Drive, they spotted a suspicious red Fiat Uno and closely monitored its movements. At about 12:15, the vehicle stopped in front of a shopping complex and the members approached it. They noticed that the licence disc had expired in 2023 and proceeded to search the vehicle.
“They found a big white bag in the boot containing three fully automatic assault rifles and arrested the two occupants, aged 32 and 45-years, on the spot for possession of prohibited firearms,” said SAPS.
