CRIME SCENE: Gugulethu, Cape Town: A 16-year-old boy who was allegedly involved in a smash and grab incident, died when he was knocked over by a car on Tuesday afternoon, 11 August 2026.

Captain FC Van Wyk, a media liaison officer for the Western Cape police, said a culpable homicide case was opened following the accident which happened on the N2 highway, opposite Gugulethu, in the direction of Cape Town CBD.

“Police members attended to the scene and on further investigation it was revealed that the deceased was allegedly involved in a smash and grab incident. He fled the scene and ran in front of an oncoming Ford Eco Sport vehicle.

“The vehicle hit him and he was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel.  Gugulethu police also registered a common robbery case for further investigation,” said Van Wyk.

Daar word beweer die regsfirma Botha, de Wet en Roodt in Junie 2016 aangestel is om met die boedel van ‘n oorlede kliënt te help.

Meer as R130 000 is na bewering van die oorledene se bankrekening na die trustrekening van die regsfirma oorgeplaas, maar Botha het na bewering nooit die geld aan die begunstigde uitbetaal nie.

Botha is op borgtog van R5 000 vrygelaat en die saak is uitgestel tot 30 September 2026 vir ‘n verskyning in die gespesialiseerde handels-misdaadhof in Klerksdorp.

FROM THE COURTS: A 69-year-old attorney has appeared in court for allegedly stealing R130 000 from a deceased client’s estate.

Barend Botha appeared in the Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 11 August 2026, facing charges of theft after he was arrested on the same day by the Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit.

It is alleged that in June 2016, Botha, de Wet and Roodt law firm was appointed to assist with the estate of their deceased client. 

Over R130 000 was allegedly transferred from the deceased’s bank account into the trust account of the law firm, but Botha allgedly did not transfer the money to the beneficiary.

Botha was granted R5000 bail and the  matter was postponed to 30 September 2026 for an appearance at the Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Klerksdorp.

NATIONAL: At least 14 illegal miners (commonly known as Zama-Zamas) died tragically on Monday night, 10 August 2025 when the mine walls collapsed on them. 

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the North West Province, Lieutenant General Arthur Adams, has confirmed the deaths of 14 illegal miners at the Nkaneng dumping site in Bojanala Sub-District 2 (Rustenburg).

The incident was reported to the police at approximately 21h00 on Monday, 10 August 2026.

“Preliminary information indicates that a group of suspected zama-zamas was conducting an illegal mining operation at a dumping site. A permit had been granted to a company to extract PGM (Platinum Group Metals) in the area. The group of zama-zamas was allegedly manually digging in an excavated area when the walls caved in, trapping the illegal miners inside.

“Nearby mine security was informed of the incident by a fellow zama-zama who, after reporting the incident, disappeared. Most of the deceased are understood to be Basotho nationals,” said SAPS.

Eight people who were rescued have been admitted to a local hospital, where they are receiving medical treatment. Three were discharged shortly after receiving treatment and were detained for contravention of the Immigration Act. The remaining five are still being kept in hospital under police guard.

Authorities are continuing to assess the situation amid concerns that an unknown number of illegal miners may still be trapped underground. 

Adams described the incident as a tragic reminder of the dangers associated with illegal mining.


Police bolster presence after night of killings

CRIME SCENE: Cape Town: The South African Police Service (SAPS) have bolstered police visibility in a number of areas following shooting incidents in which 11 people were killed.

Provincial Serious Violent Crimes Unit detectives are investigating the three incidents which happened in Langa, Gugulethu and Khayelitsha.

The carnage started on Saturday, 8 August 2026 at approximately 22:45 in Langa where four men and a woman were shot and killed in Winnie Mandela Street, KwaLanga.

A few minutes later at about 22:50 three men aged 25, 31 and 35-years were shot dead in the TR Section, Lingelethu West in Khayelitsha..

Then on Sunday morning, 9 August 2026 at about 4:10 two men and a woman were shot dead in the Barcelona informal settlement in Gugulethu. Two other were wounded in the same incident.

Western Cape police have reinforced deployments in the affected areas as well as other potential hotspots.

Reagan Cheslin Collis (23) has made his first appearance in the Boksburg Magistrates court on four counts of murder, a count of attempted murder, two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. The case relates to the murder of two Anti-Gang-Unit police officers and two women. Collis’ case was postponed to 25 August 2026 for formal bail application.

CRIME SCENE: Reiger Park, Gauteng: A known gangster, who was out on bail in other cases, has been arrested for the killing of two South African Police Service (SAPS) members and two civilians.

According to SAPS the multidisciplinary team engaged in a tracing operation of suspects allegedly involved in the murder of two Gauteng the two Anti-Gang-Unit members, Constables Tapelo Tlomatsana and Sphiwe Sibeko as well as two civilian women.

“The suspect is reportedly a known gangster who was out on bail with several outstanding cases before court including two murders, two attempted murders and possession of an unlicensed firearm. The investigation into the killings remains ongoing, with police continuing to pursue all those involved.

“The investigation is continuing and we are not ruling out the possibility of more arrests,” said SAPS.

CRIME SCENE: Kuruman, Northern Cape: The South African Police Service (SAPS) are investigating an incident in which the driver of a Toyota Quantum was shot inside his vehicle.

According to SAPS, the “alleged shooting incident occurred on Thursday, 6 August 2026 at approximately 18:00, at the Bankara T- junction in Kuruman.

“It is alleged that the 36-year-old male driver of a Toyota Quantum, with one passenger, was driving near the hitch-hiking spot at the Bankara T-junction where he stopped and picked up two passengers.

“It is alleged that one of the passengers was armed with a firearm. The driver was reportedly forced to sit behind the driver’s seat. One of the passengers reportedly then shot the driver in the face and shoulder,” said SAPS.

Kuruman SAPS are investigating a case of attempted murder and are urging community members who may have information regarding the incident to contact the investigating officer Sergeant Othusitse Sepalamelo at 072 101 5008. Alternatively contact Stop on 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS-App.

All information will be treated confidentially.

SAPS said it was aware of a video about the incident circulating on social media and urged the public to refrain from posting unverified information that may be distressing and cause panic.

Volgens die Suid-Afrikaanse Polisiediens (SAPD) het die Hertzogville polisie op 10 Augustus, 2026 na die misdaadtoneel by Old Cemetery gegaan, waar hulle op die liggaam van die kind, met ernstige kopbeserings en in komberse en gordyne toegedraai, afegkom.

Kenners van die plaaslike strafrekordsentrum in Welkom is ontbied om die toneel te verwerk.

‘n Saak van moord is by die Hertzogville polisie geopen, en ‘n voorlopige ondersoek is begin.

Die polisie het die seun se huis in Malebogo besoek waar hulle bloedbevlekte dele van die komberse en gordyne gevind het, asook klere wat vermoedelik aan die kind behoort.
