Chinese nabbed for ‘fake’ liquor

CRIME SCENE: Eerste River, Cape Town: The police have arrested a Chinese man and confiscated suspected fake liquor worth millions of rands.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) said in a statement a joint operation between the police’s Counterfeit Unit, Liquor Authority, SA Revenue Service, and SA National Defence Force (SANDF) in Eerste River led to the discovery of a liquor store with suspected fake alcohol, which was planned to be exported.

“On Tuesday, 26 May at approximately 10:00 the members of Operation Prosper approached the shop owned by the Chinese national. By the end of their inspection they had confiscated 6,201 litres of various liquor products with an estimated value of R3.5 million.

“The suspect was arrested and detained at the Kleinvlei police station.”
