CRIME SCENE: Langa, Cape Town: The sharp eye of a CCTV operator together with the City’s enforcement agencies led to the quick arrest of three suspects in the early hours of Monday morning, 21 September 2026.

The CCTV operator spotted a suspect carrying a firearm in Washington Drive, Langa just after 01:00.

The suspect went inside a premises in the area, and emerged a short while later, where he handed the firearm over to a second man.

Law Enforcement and South African Police Service (SAPS) officers responded to the alert, and were guided to the suspect by the CCTV operator. SAPS officers took a 21-year-old man into custody for the possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.

‘We’ve had numerous examples in recent weeks of how technology boosts the fight against crime. This latest incident simply reiterates that point very clearly.

“Even more encouraging is the manner in which inter-agency collaboration is growing between our enforcement services and SAPS and what is possible when we work together,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith.

Bellville: In another incident on Sunday, 20th September, a vehicle was hijacked in Makhaza, Khayelitsha. The City’s Metro Police Tactical Response Unit (TRU) members later found it parked at the taxi rank.

They set up surveillance on the vehicle and observed three suspects returning to the car and driving it away.

A tactical vehicle stop was initiated and the occupants attempted to flee the scene. All 3 occupants were apprehended and handed over to Bellville SAPS, for “possession of a hijacked vehicle.”

The City’s law enforcement agencies made 469 arrests in the past week, and issued 72 842 fines during weekly enforcement patrols.
