Couple alleged to have committed fraud

Hawks arrest Zakah directors

CRIME SCENE: Mitchells Plain, Cape Town: The Crimes Against the State and National Priority Violent Crime teams of the Hawks, in conjunction with Lentegeur Visible Policing, arrested two suspects aged 48 and 41-years, on Tuesday, 7 July 2026, for fraud.

According to the Hawks during 2018 and 2020 the South African Zakah Fund received an application from the two suspects for financial assistance to conduct Islamic studies and Qur’aan memorisation for under privileged youth.

Both suspects were registered as directors of the South African Zakah Fund and subsequently received an amount of R171 350 in support of the under privileged youth.

It is, however, alleged that the suspects used the funds for travelling expenses. They are due to appear in the Cape Town Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 08 July 2026.
