ACCIDENT SCENE: Two accidents claimed 18 lives on South African lives in the space of a few hours on Thursday, 30 July 2026.

The police in the Free State are investigating a fatal road accident involving a passenger bus that occurred on the N1 national road, approximately 5 kilometres outside Trompsburg heading towards Bloemfontein.

A passenger bus carrying around 78 occupants, including the driver, was travelling along the N1 route from Cape Town to Zimbabwe when the  driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to capsize and overturn on the highway.

​Regrettably, 10 passengers were declared deceased at the scene. The victims include four adult females; ​one adult male; ​three girls and two boys.

​There were 57 passengers who sustained injuries and transported to the local Albert Nzula Hospital in Trompsburg for medical treatment. ​Nine passengers were rushed to Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein for further specialized medical care.

​The bus driver has been taken into police custody for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

In the other crash a eight people died on the R27 between Calvinia and Brandvlei.

The collision occurred at approximately 18:46 on Thursday, 30 July 2026, about 56 kilometres from Calvinia in the direction of Brandvlei.

The collision involved a Volkswagen Polo and a Ford bakkie.

The sole occupant of the Ford bakkie, a 27-year-old male, sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased at the scene.

The Volkswagen Polo was carrying five occupants, all of whom also succumbed to injuries sustained in the collision.

The deceased comprise adults aged 26, 29, 52, 59 and 64-years, as well as two children aged 7 and 9 years.

The cause of the collision forms part of the ongoing police investigation.
