Allegedly took up to 60% of workers' pay

MK Chief Whip in court for fraud

CRIME SCENE: Cape Town: The 46-year-old Chief Whip of uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, Mmabatho Mokoena-Zondi, was arrested on Thursday morning, 28 May 2026 in connection with fraud.

The arrest was made by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (the Hawks). It is alleged that during August 2024 to December 2024 the suspect head hunted and recruited four individuals into the party as researchers and during their employment she demanded payments under the pretext that it was for the legal cost of the MK president, Jacob Zuma

She allegedly took between 50 and 60% of their salaries over the period, which in total came to about R233 317.

Mokoena-Zondi is expected to make her first appearance in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 28 May 2026.
