Newborn found dead in garbage
CRIME SCENE: Swellendam, Southern Cape: Refuse removal staff of the Swellendam municipality made a shocking discovery on Wednesday, 10 June 2026 when they found the body of a newborn baby hidden in a black refuse bag.

Anneleen Vorster, the Municipal Manager for Swellendam Municipality, said in a media release the refuse removal team discovered the infant while on routine duties in Sneeuvlokkie Street, Railton.
“Due process will follow to determine the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident. The necessary counselling has been arranged for the refuse removal team.
“The municipality convey its sympathy with residents and especially the immediate surrounding community members. We urge residents to make use of available trauma support services during this difficult time,” said Vorster.
According to Warrant Officer Christopher Spies, a media liaison officer for the Southern Cape police, a concealment of birth docket was opened after the body of an infant was discovered at the back of a garbage truck.
“Swellendam police members were summoned to the scene at about 12:50 on 10 June 2026. On arrival the truck driver directed the members to a garbage bag where the body was found among debris. The infant was declared dead by paramedics on scene,” said Spies
