CRIME SCENE: Cape Town International Airport: The Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA) has reassured the public that the safety and security of everyone at the airport remains a priority.

The reaction follows after a hijacking unfolded just outside the Cape Town International Airport, forcing an immediate response from law enforcement and airport security.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) that the Flying Squad arrested four male suspects between the ages of 16 and 2-years following the hijacking at the airport on Monday, 7 September 2026. 

“The team responded to reports of a hijacking at about 17:15. They rapidly intercepted the white VW Polo in Bonteheuwel and arrested the four male occupants for hijacking and possession of a stolen vehicle.

“Their rapid intervention ensured the incident was contained without further danger to the public,” said SAPS.

The police were assisted by the hijack victim’s cellphone which the hijackers left in the car. The police were able to track the device to its location in Bonteheuwel.

ACSA, which manages Cape Town International, said its security teams worked hand‑in‑hand with SAPS.

 “We understand that an incident like this can be unsettling, and we want to reassure travellers and the public that the safety and security of everyone at our airport remains our priority,” the airport said.

ACSA also thanked SAPS and its own personnel for their coordinated effort, stressing that the swift action helped restore calm and reinforce safety measures at the airport.
