Murder: Cops make quick arrests

CRIME SCENE: Bonteheuwel, Cape Town: The South African Police Service (SAPS) arrested two murder suspects within minutes of a man dying in a gang related shooting on Thursday, 2 July 2026.

According to SAPS members of Bishop Lavis police responded to the sound of gunshots going off near to where they were patrolling on Thursday afternoon.

“They swiftly responded and headed in the direction where they heard the gunshots. Upon arrival on the corner of Boekenhout Street and Bramble Way, Bonteheuwel, they found a 31-year-old male who sustained gunshot wounds to his body. The victim was declared deceased on the scene,” said the SAPS.

The Flying Squad who also responded to the shooting incident then noticed two males fleeing the scene and gave chase.

According to SAPS the suspects were apprehended and searched.

“They were found with a .38 Special revolver with ammunition and a 9mm pistol in their possession. The 25 and 39-year-old suspects face charges for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and murder.”

According to the ward councillor for Bonteheuwel, Angus McKenzie, people in the community also played a role in the arrests by providing information via their anonymous tip-off line.

“This is a massive victory for the people of Bonteheuwel and sends a clear message that when residents work together with law enforcement, criminals have nowhere to hide.

“A sincere word of thanks goes to the South African Police Service Flying Squad, whose rapid response and decisive action on the information received led to these successful arrests.

“To every resident who continues to provide information anonymously thank you. Your courage and willingness to speak up are helping make our communities safer,” said McKenzie.
