Hunt on for councillor’s killer

CRIME SCENE: Knysna, Southern Cape: The police have launched a manhunt for the killer of Knysna ward councillor, Aubrey Tsengwa, who was shot in his car.

One of three passengers who was in the car with 48-year-old Tsengwa, who is an ANC councillor and former mayor of Knysna, was wounded when the gunman opened fire on them in Joodsekamp on Wednesday evening, 19 August 2026,

Detectives from the Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit are investigating the murder along wiith three counts of attempted murder.

Police responded to the shooting in Ngxalo Street at approximately 21:20 and found the ward councillor with multiple gunshot wounds to his head and upper body. He was declared deceased at the scene, according to the police.

Preliminary information indicates the councillor was driving a vehicle with three passengers when they were approached by an unknown man who opened fire on the vehicle before fleeing the scene on foot. One of the passengers sustained a gunshot wound to the arm and was transported to hospital for medical treatment.

The motive for the shooting is yet to be determined and no arrests have been made at this stage.
