CRIME SCENE: Crossroads, Cape Town: City of Cape Town LEAP officers have made a major firearms bust after community tip-offs.

While patrolling in Crossroads on Wednesday afternoon, 29 July 2026, the LEAP (Law Enforcement Advancement Plan) officers were approached by concerned residents about a suspicious Ford Ranger bakkie.

They said the vehicle had repeatedly been leaving and returning to the area and appeared to be waiting for something to happen.

The officers proceeded to the location and after securing the three occupants, they conducted a search of the vehicle.

Inside they found four loaded AK-47 rifles, 10 magazines containing 287 rounds of ammunition, one loaded 9mm pistol with 62 rounds of ammunition, gloves and balaclavas.

According to the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, false number plates had been fitted to the vehicle

“All three suspects were arrested and handed over to Nyanga police for further investigation and prosecution.

“This is an exceptional arrest by our dedicated LEAP officers and once again demonstrates the value of the LEAP programme, made possible through the partnership between the City of Cape Town and the Western Cape Government, which funds the deployment of these officers,” said Smith.
