Officers take huge LEAP against crime
CRIME SCENE: Crossroads, Cape Town: City of Cape Town LEAP officers have made a major firearms bust after community tip-offs.
While patrolling in Crossroads on Wednesday afternoon, 29 July 2026, the LEAP (Law Enforcement Advancement Plan) officers were approached by concerned residents about a suspicious Ford Ranger bakkie.
They said the vehicle had repeatedly been leaving and returning to the area and appeared to be waiting for something to happen.
The officers proceeded to the location and after securing the three occupants, they conducted a search of the vehicle.
Inside they found four loaded AK-47 rifles, 10 magazines containing 287 rounds of ammunition, one loaded 9mm pistol with 62 rounds of ammunition, gloves and balaclavas.
According to the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, false number plates had been fitted to the vehicle
“All three suspects were arrested and handed over to Nyanga police for further investigation and prosecution.
“This is an exceptional arrest by our dedicated LEAP officers and once again demonstrates the value of the LEAP programme, made possible through the partnership between the City of Cape Town and the Western Cape Government, which funds the deployment of these officers,” said Smith.

MISDAADTONEEL: Bainsvlei, Bloemfontein: ‘n 44-jarige man is gearresteer nadat hy na bewering ‘n vuurwapen op sy vrou gerig en haar aangerand het in ‘n geval van gesinsgeweld.
Volgens die Suid-Afrikaanse Polisiediens (SAPD) is ‘n tweede verdagte, ‘n 64-jarige man, gearresteer vir die besit van ‘n ongelisensieerde vuurwapen.
Volgens die SAPD het die Fezile Dabi-distrik Highway Patrol in die Vrystaat Dinsdag 28 Julie 2026, omstreeks 00:50, inligting ontvang oor ‘n wit VW Tiguan wat op die N1 na Sasolburg onderweg is.
Daar is beweer die bestuurder van die voertuig word gesoek in verband met ‘n saak wat in Bainsvlei geregistreer is nadat hy na bewering ‘n vuurwapen op sy vrou gerig en haar aangerand het.
“Die polisie het die voertuig by Vaal Plaza onderskep. Nadat die beamptes die voertuig gestop en deursoek het, het hulle twee manlike insittendes gevind. Tydens die deursoeking is twee vuurwapens gevind.
“Een van die vuurwapens, wat aan die passasier behoort, was ongelisensieerd. Die twee mans is op afsonderlike aanklagte gearresteer,” het die SAPD gesê.

Man nabbed for pointing gun at wife
CRIME SCENE: Bainsvlei, Bloemfontein: A 44-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly pointing a firearm at his wife and assaulting her in a domestic violence incident.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) a second suspect, a 64-year-old man, was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm.
On Tuesday, 28 July 2026, at approximately 00:50, the Fezile Dabi District Highway Patrol in the Free State received information about a white VW Tiguan travelling on the N1 towards Sasolburg.
It was alleged that the driver of the vehicle was wanted in connection with a case registered at Bainsvlei after he allegedly pointed a firearm at his wife and assaulted her.
“Police conducted a waylay operation, and the vehicle was intercepted at Vaal Plaza. Upon stopping and searching the vehicle, officers found two male occupants. During the search, two firearms were recovered.
“One of the firearms, belonging to the passenger, was found to be unlicensed. The two suspects were arrested on separate charges,” said SAPS.

MISDAADTONEEL: Heathfield, Kaapstad: Privaat sekuriteitswagte en die Suid-Afrikaanse Polisiediens (SAPD) het vinnig reageer en ‘n verdagte gearresteer minute nadat ‘n supermark Woensdagmiddag, 29 Julie 2026 beroof is.
Sersant Wesley Twigg, ‘n skakelbeampte vir die Wes-Kaapse polisie, sê die Kirstenhof-polisie het ‘n saak van sakeroof oopgemaak ná ‘n rooftog by ‘n supermark in Hoofweg, Heathfield, omstreeks 12:30.
“Onbekende verdagtes het die winkel binnegegaan en een van die klante van haar selfoon beroof. Die verdagtes het van die toneel gevlug toe sekuriteitswagte opdaag.
“Ons kan bevestig dat een volwasse man gearresteer is toe hy in besit van die selfoon wat aan die klant behoort gevind is,” het Twigg gesê.
Toe Crime Scene Report se verslaggewer by die toneel aankom, was die verdagte agter in ‘n polisievangwa toegesluit en die toneel afgesper, terwyl die polisie dit vir moontlike leidrade gefynkam het.
Geen beserings is op die toneel aangemeld nie.
Nyanga: Pogings om afpersing in die Nyanga-gebied te bekamp, het sukses opgelewer toe polisielede twee verdagtes gearresteer het.
Lede van die Nyanga-polisie het patrollies in Mfenyane-weg uitgevoer toe hulle inligting ontvang het oor twee skobbejakke wat besig was om winkeleienaars af te pers.
Die SAPD sê hulle het die inligting opgevolg en mans wat by die beskrywing pas gesien. Toe die verdagtes die polisie gewaar, het hulle gevlug, maar is met behulp van die gemeenskap aangekeer. ‘n 9 mm-pistool met ammunisie en ‘n nagemaakte vuurwapen is gekonfiskeer.
Die verdagtes, onderskeidelik 21 en 24-jaar-oud, staar aanklagte van die onwettige besit van ‘n vuurwapen en ammunisie, asook die besit van ‘n nagemaakte vuurwapen in die gesig.
Hanover Park: In ‘n onverwante saak het lede van die Anti-Bende-Eenheid voetpatrollies in Petunia-straat, Hanover Park, gedoen toe hulle opmerk hoe ‘n verdagte begin hardloop toe hy hulle sien.
“Die polisie lede het die verdagte agternagesit en hy iets laat val terwyl hy hardloop. By verdere ondersoek het hulle ‘n 9 mm-pistool met ammunisie in ‘n erf gevind. ‘n Ondersoek na die oorsprong van die vuurwapen is geopen,” het die SAPD gesê.

Robbery suspect caught in no time
CRIME SCENE: Heathfield, Cape Town: Private security guards and the South African Police Service (SAPS) reacted quickly and arrested a suspect minutes after a supermarket was robbed on Wednesday afternoon, 29 July 2026.
Sergeant Wesley Twigg, a media liaison officer for the Western Cape police, said Kirstenhof police registered a business robbery for investigation following the robbery at a superette in Main Road, Heathfield, at about 12:30.
“Unknown suspects entered the shop and robbed one of the customers of her cellular telephone. The suspects fled the scene when security guards arrived.
“We can confirm that one adult male suspect was arrested when he was found in possession of the cellular telephone belonging to the customer,” said Twigg.
When Crime Scene Report arrived at the scene, the suspect was locked up in the back of a police van and the scene cordoned off, while police were combing it for possible leads.
There were no injuries reported at the scene.
Nyanga: Efforts to curb extortion in the Nyanga area yielded success when police members arrested two suspects.
Members of Nyanga police were conducting patrols in Mfenyane Road, when they received information about two men who were busy extorting shop owners.
SAPS said they followed up on the information and saw the suspects fitting the description. When the suspects noticed the police they fled, but were apprehended with the help of the community. A 9mm pistol with ammunition and an imitation firearm were confiscated.
The suspects, aged 21 and 24-years, face charges of the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition and the possession of an imitation firearm.
Hanover Park: In an unrelated matter, members of the Anti-Gang-Unit were conducting foot patrols in Petunia Street, Hanover Park, when they noticed a suspect started to run when he saw the police.
“The members chased after the suspect who dropped something while running. Upon further investigation they found a 9mm pistol with ammunition in the yard. An investigation into the origin of the firearm was opened,” said SAPS.

NASIONAAL: ‘n 39-jarige verdagte van Paballong, QwaQwa in die Vrystaat, is Dinsdag 28 Julie 2026 gearresteer tydens ‘n intelligensie-gedrewe operasie deur die Fouriesburg Veediefstaleenheid.
Die verdagte is in besit van 15 skape ter waarde van ongeveer R22 000 by ‘n woning in Bohlokong gevind, het die Suid-Afrikaanse Polisiediens (SAPD) gesê.
Die Bethlehem misdaadintelligensie-eenheid het in samewerking met die Fouriesburg Veediefstaleenheid, opgetree inligting ontvang het oor ‘n verdagte voertuig wat na bewering vee vervoer.
Die voertuig is by ‘n eiendom in Bohlokong opgespoor, waar die polisie 15 skape met vervalste identifikasie-tatoeëermerke gevind het. Die verdagte kon nie bewys van eienaarskap toon nie en is onmiddellik gearresteer.
Die SAPD het mense versoek om nie gesteelde vee of karkasse vir persoonlike gebruik of finansiële gewin te koop nie, aangesien dit ‘n kriminele oortreding is.
Man found in possession of suspected stolen stock
Police nab ‘sheep thief’
NATIONAL: A 39-year-old suspect from Paballong Village, QwaQwa in the Free State was arrested on Tuesday, 28 July 2026, during an intelligence-driven operation conducted by the Fouriesburg Stock Theft Unit.
The suspect was found in possession of 15 sheep valued at approximately R22 000 at a residence in Bohlokong, said the South African Police Service (SAPS).
On Tuesday, 28 July 2026, members of the Bethlehem Crime Intelligence Unit, working together with the Fouriesburg Stock Theft Unit, acted on information regarding a suspicious vehicle allegedly transporting livestock.
The vehicle was traced to a residential property in Bohlokong. During the search, police recovered 15 sheep bearing tampered identification tattoos. The suspect failed to produce the required proof of ownership for the livestock and was immediately arrested.
SAPS urged community members not to purchase stolen livestock or carcasses for personal use or financial gain, as it is a criminal offence.

WES-KAAP: Luitenant-generaal William Dyantyi is aangestel as die nuwe Provinsiale Polisiekommissaris van die Wes-Kaap, effektief 1 Augustus 2026.
Die waarnemende Nasionale Polisiekommissaris, Luitenant-generaal Puleng Dimpane, het die nuwe aanstelling Woensdagoggend, 29 Julie 2026 by die provinsiale polisiehoofkwartier in Kaapstad aangekondig.
Luitenant-generaal Dyantyi het 34-jaar ervaring in die polisie en het in verskeie operasionele en leierskapsrolle in die Oos- en Wes-Kaap gedien.
Dimpane het gesê Dyantyi het ‘n diep begrip van polisiëring op stasie-, distrik- en provinsiale vlak, ondersteun deur ‘n sterk verbintenis tot uitnemendheid, integriteit en gemeenskapsveiligheid.
Die Suid-Afrikaanse Polisiediens (SAPD) het Dyantyi gelukgewens met sy aanstelling en hom alle sukses toegewens “terwyl hy polisiëring in die Wes-Kaap lei in samewerking met gemeenskappe en ander belanghebbendes om ‘n veiliger provinsie vir almal te skep”.
Dyanti vervang Luitenant-generaal (Adv) Thembisile Phathekile wat vroeër vanjaar afgetree het. Dimpane het Phathekile bedank vir sy vooraanstaande leierskap en toegewyde diens aan die mense van die Wes-Kaap.

New top cop for Western Cape
WESTERN CAPE: Lieutenant General William Dyantyi has been appointed as the new Provincial Police Commissioner of the Western Cape, effective 1 August 2026.
The Acting National Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, announced the new appointment on Wednesday morning, 29 July 2026 at the Provincial Police headquarters in Cape Town.
Lieutenant General Dyantyi brings with him 34 years of policing experience, having served in various operational and leadership roles across the Eastern and Western Cape.
Dimpane said his career reflected a deep understanding of policing at station, district and provincial level, underpinned by a strong commitment to service excellence, integrity and community safety.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) congratulated Dyantyi on his appointment and wished him every success “as he leads policing in the Western Cape in partnership with communities and stakeholders to create a safer province for all”.
Dyanti replaces Lieutenant General (Adv) Thembisile Phathekile who retired earlier this year. Dimpane thanked Phathekile for his distinguished leadership and dedicated service to the people of the Western Cape.
