Robbery suspect caught in no time

CRIME SCENE: Heathfield, Cape Town: Private security guards and the South African Police Service (SAPS) reacted quickly and arrested a suspect minutes after a supermarket was robbed on Wednesday afternoon, 29 July 2026.

Sergeant Wesley Twigg, a media liaison officer for the Western Cape police, said Kirstenhof police registered a business robbery for investigation following the robbery at a superette in Main Road, Heathfield, at about 12:30.

“Unknown suspects entered the shop and robbed one of the customers of her cellular telephone. The suspects fled the scene when security guards arrived.

 “We can confirm that one adult male suspect was arrested when he was found in possession of the cellular telephone belonging to the customer,” said Twigg. 

When Crime Scene Report arrived at the scene, the suspect was locked up in the back of a police van and the scene cordoned off, while police were combing it for possible leads.

There were no injuries reported at the scene.

Nyanga: Efforts to curb extortion in the Nyanga area yielded success when police members arrested two suspects.

Members of Nyanga police were conducting patrols in Mfenyane Road, when they received information about two men who were busy extorting shop owners.

SAPS said they followed up on the information and saw the suspects fitting the description. When the suspects noticed the police they fled, but were apprehended with the help of the community. A 9mm pistol with ammunition and an imitation firearm were confiscated.

The suspects, aged 21 and 24-years, face charges of the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition and the possession of an imitation firearm.

Hanover Park: In an unrelated matter, members of the Anti-Gang-Unit were conducting foot patrols in Petunia Street, Hanover Park, when they noticed a suspect started to run when he saw the police.

“The members chased after the suspect who dropped something while running. Upon further investigation they found a 9mm pistol with ammunition in the yard. An investigation into the origin of the firearm was opened,” said SAPS.
