CRIME SCENE: Mamelodi, Pretoria: The Security Personnel Party of South Africa  (SPPSA) has offered a R200 000 reward for the apprehension and successful prosecution of those responsible for a deadly cash-in-transit robbery.

Two security guards died and one was seriously wounded when the robbers opened fire on them in Mamelodi East Ext 16 on Monday, 7 September 2026.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) there was a subsequent shootout between police and the suspects, during which a state vehicle was damaged. No police member was injured.  

The SPPSA strongly condemned the “violent and reckless cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery that occurred on Monday”.

“It is reported that a heavily armed syndicate intercepted an armored vehicle, utilizing high-caliber firearms and explosives to compromise the cash van before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of money.

“Such acts of extreme violence show a complete disdain for human life and the rule of law.

“A multidisciplinary task team has been activated to relentlessly track down these dangerous criminals and bring them to book,” said the SPPSA.

CIT robberies face widespread condemnation from law enforcement, private security regulators and government officials across South Africa.

SAPS Crime Intelligence and K9 Unit also followed up on information and arrested a 21-year-old bystander, who was found in possession of a rifle allegedly stolen from the crime scene. He is facing charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The SPPSA issued a warning to members of the community to refrain from gathering at the crime scene to collect scattered notes. 

“This practice is a criminal offence, constitutes theft, and gravely risks lives due to unexploded devices and volatile crime scene dynamics. We are also pleased that the police have arrested the member of the community who was found with a rifle allegedly stolen at the scene,” it said.

The Cash-in-Transit Association of South Africa (CITASA) has also expressed its deep sadness and outrage following the deaths of the two CIT employees in Mamelodi as well as the two CIT guards who lost their lives in a separate cash-in-transit robbery in KwaZulu-Natal also on Monday, 7 September 2026.
