Night of terror on Cape Flats

CRIME SCENE: Cape Flats: Seven people were killed and at least five injured in two mass shooting incidents on Wednesday night, 8 July 2026.

Three people died in a shooting in Tafelsig.

In the first incident, which occurred at about 20:10 at the corner of Laura Street and 8th Avenue in Lost City, Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain, five men were reportedly standing outside a local tuck shop when they were approached by armed suspects who opened fire on them.

According to a media liaison officer for the Western Cape police, Colonel Andrè Traut, three victims, aged 18, 19 and 51-years, sustained fatal gunshot wounds and were declared deceased at the scene. Two other victims, aged 17 and 22-years, were transported to a medical facility for treatment.

“A short while later, at about 20:30, police responded to a shooting incident at a residence in Marcus Garvey, Philippi East, where seven people were shot. Four victims, aged between 17 and 20-years, died at the scene, while three others were admitted to hospital for medical treatment.

“The circumstances surrounding both incidents are the subject of ongoing investigations,” said Traut.

“To prevent any further violence and enhance public safety, police deployments in the affected areas have been heightened. Members will maintain a visible presence and continue to conduct crime prevention operations aimed at stabilising the communities and ensuring the safety of residents.

“Western Cape police condemn these acts of violence in the strongest possible terms and remain committed to bringing those responsible to justice,” said Traut.

Earlier one person reportedly also died during a shooting incident in Komati Road, Mfuleni.

MISDAADTONEEL: Mitchells Plain, Kaapstad: Twee mans wat winkel toe gestap het in Tafelsig, het amper met hulle lewens geboet.

Volgens ‘n media skakelbeampte vir die Wes-Kaapse polisie, kaptein FC van Wyk, is die twee slagoffers Vrydag, 29 Mei 2026 om 20:00 deur ‘n onbekende man geskiet.

“Mitchells Plain SAPD-lede het ‘n klag ontvang van ‘n skietvoorval naby ‘n bushalte in Kilimanjaro-straat. Met hul aankoms het hulle twee slagoffers gevind, ‘n 28-jarige man met ‘n skietwond aan sy agterstewe en ‘n 26-jarige man met ‘n skietwond aan die rug.

“Volgens berigte was die slagoffers op pad na ‘n winkel toe ‘n verdagte twee skote op hulle afgevuur het. Hulle is na nabygeleë hospitale vervoer vir behandeling. Mitchells Plain-polisie het twee aanklagte van poging tot moord geregistreer.

“Die motief is vermoedelik bendeverwant,” het Van Wyk gesê.

CRIME SCENE: Mitchells Plain, Cape Town: A walk to the shop almost cost two men their lives in Tafelsig on Friday night.

According to a media liaison officer for the Western Cape police, Captain FC van Wyk, the two victims were shot by an unknown gunman on 29 May 2026 at 20:00.

“Mitchells Plain SAPS members received a complaint of a shooting incident in Kilimanjaro Street near a bus stop. On arrival they found two victims, a 28-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the buttocks and a 26-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the lower back.

“According to reports the victims was walking to a shop, when a suspect fired two shots at them. They were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Mitchells Plain police registered two counts of attempted murder.

“Motive is believed to be gang related,” said Van Wyk.
