CRIME SCENE: Retreat, Cape Town: The Retreat Community Health Centre returned to normal operations on Monday morning, 19 October 2026 following a fatal shooting right on its doorstep.

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness was forced to close the hospital on Sunday night 18 October 2026 following “a safety issue outside the facility”.

On Monday morning the Department said all services were operating as normal, and all staff and patients remained safe.

The South African Police Service said it was investigating a mass shooting in which a man was killed and three others wounded in Bernstein Street, Retreat on Sunday.

A media liaison officer for the Western Cape police, Sergeant Wesley Twigg, said a  41-year-old man was declared dead at the scene.

“The other victims, aged between 16 and 21, were transported to a medical facility for treatment. According to reports the four were standing in the road when suspects in an unknown vehicle entered the street and opened fire on them before fleeing.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated,” said Twigg.

The Our Lives Matter Community Action Group has called for urgent intervention following this latest shooting, which comes on the heels of a number of deaths and injuries in other incidents which happened nearby.
