Operasie lewer 1200 arrestasies in Mei
Prosper se druk gaan versterk
NASIONAAL: Operasie Prosper het gedurende Mei meer as 1200 mense agter tralies gesit vir ernstige misdrywe.
Die Suid-Afrikaanse Polisiediens (SAPD) en die Suid-Afrikaanse Nasionale Weermag (SANDF) sê egter dit is ver van genoeg en hulle gaan voort om georganiseerde kriminele netwerke wat betrokke is by onwettige mynbou, bende verwante geweld en ander ernstige en gewelddadige misdade te beveg.
Gedurende Mei 2026 het gekoördineerde multi-dissiplinêre operasies in vyf provinsies gelei tot die arrestasie van 1 287 verdagtes.
Die verdagtes is gearresteer vir misdade wat insluit onwettige mynbou oortredings, moord, aanranding met die doel om ernstig te beseer, onwettige besit van vuurwapens en ammunisie, oortreding van die Immigrasiewet en verskeie ander ernstige oortredings.
Operasie Prosper bestaan uit personeel van verskeie wetstoepassings- en sekuriteitsagentskappe wat ontplooi is in die Wes-Kaap, Oos-Kaap, Vrystaat, Gauteng, en Noordwes.
Operasionele aktiwiteite sluit in patrollies met hoë sigbaarheid, voertuig kontrolepunte, padversperrings, stop-en-deursoek-operasies en intelligensie-gedrewe aksies.
Arrestasies vir Mei sluit in:
▪ Agt verdagtes vir moord
▪ 384 verdagtes vir dwelmverwante oortredings
▪ Vier verdagtes vir aanranding ernstig
▪ Nege verdagtes vir die onwettige besit van vuurwapens en ammunisie
▪ Ses vir die onwettige besit van ammunisie
▪ Vier verdagtes vir die onwettige besit van materiaal wat goud bevat
▪ 363 vir die oortreding van die Immigrasiewet
▪ Sewe verdagtes vir die besit van vermoedelik gesteelde eiendom
▪ 502 mense vir oortredings wat insluit roof, besit van gevaarlike wapens, kwaadwillige saakbeskadiging, oortreding van die Wet op tweedehandse goedere, oortreding van die Padverkeerswet, bedrog en drank verwante oortredings
Items wat terug gevind is sluit in:
▪ 31 onwettige en ongelisensieerde vuurwapens en 11 replika-vuurwapens
▪ 1 703 rondtes ammunisie en 7 magasyne
▪ 13 740 liter onwettige alkohol
▪ Een gesteelde voertuig
▪ Verskeie hoeveelhede dwelms, insluitend dagga, Mandrax, Heroïen en CAT
Operasie Prosper vorm deel van die nasionale misdaadbestryding-inisiatief wat deur president Cyril Ramaphosa tydens sy 2026 Staatsrede aangekondig is.
Die SAPD en SANDF sê hulle bly daartoe verbind om saam met ander wetstoepassing-agentskappe en die regering te werk om te verseker dat kriminele netwerke ontwrig, oortreders aanspreeklik gehou en gemeenskappe beveilig word.

NATIONAL: The South African Police Service (SAPS) and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) continue to intensify efforts aimed at disrupting and dismantling organised criminal networks involved in illicit mining, gang-related violence and other serious and violent crimes.
During the month of May 2026, coordinated multidisciplinary operations conducted across five provinces resulted in the arrest of 1 287 suspects for a range of serious offences.
The suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from illicit mining-related offences, murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, unlawful possession of gold-bearing material, contravention of the Immigration Act, to possession of suspected stolen property and various other serious offences.
Operation PROSPER currently comprises of personnel drawn from multiple law enforcement and security agencies, deployed across identified action areas in the Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, North West and Western Cape. Through a coordinated and intelligence-driven approach, operational teams continue to conduct targeted interventions aimed at restoring law and order in crime hotspots and areas affected by illicit mining and gang-related activities.
Operational activities include high-visibility patrols, vehicle checkpoints, roadblocks, cordon-and-search operations and intelligence-led enforcement actions, resulting in significant arrests and the seizure of illicit commodities, firearms and criminal infrastructure.
ARRESTS EFFECTED DURING MAY 2026
8 suspects arrested for murder
384 suspects arrested for drug-related offences
4 suspects arrested for assault GBH
9 suspects arrested for unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition
6 suspects arrested for unlawful possession of ammunition
4 suspects arrested for unlawful possession of gold-bearing material
363 suspects arrested for contravention of the Immigration Act
7 suspects arrested for possession of suspected stolen property
502 suspects arrested for offences including robbery, possession of dangerous weapons, malicious damage to property, contravention of the Second-Hand Goods Act, contravention of the Road Traffic Act, fraud and liquor-related offences
ITEMS RECOVERED AND CONFISCATED
Joint operational teams also recovered and confiscated the following items during operations conducted across the five provinces:
31 illegal and unlicensed firearms and 11 replica firearms
1 703 rounds of ammunition and 7 magazines
13 740 litres of illicit alcohol
1 stolen vehicle recovered
Gold-bearing material
Various quantities of drugs, including dagga, mandrax, heroin and CAT
Operation PROSPER forms part of the national crime-fighting initiative announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa during the 2026 State of the Nation Address.
The SAPS and SANDF remain committed to working alongside other law enforcement and government stakeholders to ensure that criminal networks are disrupted, offenders are brought to justice and communities are made safer. MISDAADTONEEL: Browns Farm, Kaapstad: ‘n Paar koeldranke het amper ‘n afleweringsman sy lewe gekos nadat hy voor ‘n winkel geskiet is, na bewering deur afpersers.
Volgens die mediakantoor van die Wes-Kaapse polisie het die Nyanga-polisie Donderdag 4 Junie 2026 omstreeks 14:55 gereageer op ‘n skietery in Nzinziniba-straat in Browns Farm.
Toe die polisie by die toneel aankom, het hulle die slagoffer voor ‘n winkel gevind met ‘n skietwond aan sy kop. Hy is na ‘n hospitaal geneem vir behandeling.
Volgens berigte was die slagoffer besig om koeldrank by die winkel af te lewer toe twee verdagtes hom nader en R2000 kontant geëis het. Die winkeleienaar het die winkel toegemaak en die slagoffer en sy kollegas alleen buite gelos.
Hulle het probeer vlug, maar die verdagtes het losgebrand en die 44-jarige man gewond. ‘n Saak van poging tot moord word ondersoek en die verdagtes is steeds op vrye voet.

CRIME SCENE: Browns Farm, Cape Town: A 44-year-old delivery man has been shot in front of a shop, allegedly by extortionists
According to the media office of the Western Cape police the Nyanga police responded to reports of a shooting in Nzinziniba Street in Browns Farm on Thursday 4 June 2026 at around 14:55.
When the police arrived at the scene they found the victim lying in front of a shop with a gunshot wound to his head. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.
According to reports, the victim was delivering cold drinks at the shop when two suspects emerged, demanding R2000 cash. The shop owner closed the shop, leaving the victim and his co-workers outside.
They attempted to flee but the suspects opened fire, wounding the 44-year-old. A case of attempted murder is under investigation, and the suspects are still at large.

Volgens Thembakazi Mpendukana van die Wes-Kaapse polisie se mediakantoor is die liggame van die twee mans op die spoorlyn langs die Oya-informele nedersetting ontdek.
“Twee moordsake is by die Maitland-polisiestasie aanhangig gemaak na die ontdekking van twee liggame met skietwonde aan hul koppe. Die motief is tans onbekend en die omstandighede rondom die voorval word ondersoek,” het Mpendukana gesê.

CRIME SCENE: Maitland, Cape Town: Two men have been shot execution style in an informal settlement in Maitland.
According to Thembakazi Mpendukana of the Western Cape police media office, the bodies of the two men were discovered on Friday morning on the railway line at the Oya informal settlement in Maitland.
“Two murder cases have been opened at Maitland police station following the discovery of two bodies with bullet wounds to their heads. The motive is currently unknown and the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation,” said Mpendukana.

MISDAADTONEEL: St Montague Village, Kaapstad: Twee tiener meisies is gearresteer in verband met die moord op ‘n bejaarde vrou in St Montague Village naby Lavender Hill.
Die vrou is geïdentifiseer as Joyce Waterloo en daar word vermoed dit is ‘n geval van gesinsgeweld.
Sersant Wesley Twigg, ‘n mediaskakelbeampte vir die Wes-Kaapse polisie, sê volgens inligting was die 59-jarige slagoffer in ‘n argument met ‘n familielid betrokke toe sy gesteek is.
“Steenberg-polisie het ‘n moordsaak geopen nadat die liggaam van ‘n 59-jarige vrou in die vroeë oggendure van Vrydag, 5 Junie 2026 in St Christopher-laan, St Montague Village, ontdek is.
“Die slagoffer het steekwonde aan haar liggaam opgedoen en is op die toneel deur mediese personeel dood verklaar.
“Ons kan bevestig dat twee vroulike verdagtes van 18 en 19-jaar-oud gearresteer is in verband met die moord en sal Maandag, 8 Junie 2026 in die Wynberg-landdroshof verskyn,” het Twigg gesê.

Woman (59) killed ‘after argument’
CRIME SCENE: St Montague Village, Cape Town: Two teenage girls have been arrested in connection with the brutal murder of an elderly woman in St Montague Village near Lavender Hill.
The woman has been identified as Joyce Waterloo and the motive for the attack is believed to be domestic related.
Sergeant Wesley Twigg, a media liaison officer for the Western Cape police, said according to reports the 59-year-old victim had an argument with a relative before she was stabbed.
“Steenberg police registered a murder case for investigation after the body of a 59-year-old female was discovered in St Christopher Avenue, St Montague Village, in the early hours of Friday morning, 5 June 2026.06.05.
“The victim sustained stab wounds to her body and was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The motive for the attack is believed to be domestic related.
“We can confirm that two female suspects aged 18 and 19 were arrested in connection with the murder and will appear in the Wynberg Magistrates’ court on Monday, 08 June 2026,” said Twigg.
