Lockdown grips Ottery

CRIME SCENE: Ottery, Cape Town: The fight against the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition yielded success when members of Operation Lockdown III arrested two suspects for illegal guns, ammunition and drugs.

On Tuesday, 26 May 2026 the police received information of a suspect in possession of possible firearms at a premises in Hohenort Court, Conrad Way, Ottery.

Captain Frederick C van Wyk, Western Cape police media liaison officer, said the members conducted a tactical operation on Wednesday morning at 00:40 the at the address and searched the occupant and premises.

“A 9mm pistol with the serial number removed, a second magazine as well as 17 rounds of ammunition were found in his possession. The firearm with the ammunition was confiscated and 36-year-old suspect arrested,” said Van Wyk. 

The members also followed up on information that a flat was used as a storage facility for firearms, ammunition and dealing in drugs.

“At around 01:00 a tactical operation was conducted at the second address.  Upon arrival at the premises, the team conducted the search. The occupant, meanwhile, moved from the bedroom, into the toilet, and threw something under the bathtub.

“Upon further investigation a silver Smith and Wesson revolver was recovered.  Members continued with their search and six sachets of dagga was found in a small container.

“A 44-year-old male was arrested for possession of a unlicensed firearm without ammunition,” said Van Wyk.

Both suspects are due to appear in the Wynberg Magistrates court on Friday, 29 May 2026.

CRIME SCENE: Athlone, Cape Town: Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) attached to Operation Lockdown arrested two suspects in separate incidents on Thursday, 14 May 2026 and Friday, 15 May 2026.

 The members were conducting intelligence driven operations at around 17:30 in Athlone. They searched a number of premises and in Sysamore Way they hit the jackpot. Here a 40-year-old male suspect was found with 31 Mandrax tablets and two half of Mandrax tablets in his possession.

The suspect was arrested for possession of drugs.

KHAYELITSHA: At around 00:20 on Friday, 15 May 2026 the members discovered 116 rounds of ammunition in Kama Street, Site C and a 23-year-old female suspect was arrested for unlawful possession of ammunition.

CRIME SCENE: Bonteheuwel, Cape Town: The police have removed another illegal firearm from Cape Town streets.

On Thursday, 16 April 2026 at about 23:15, Operation lockdown III police were busy patrolling the streets of Bonteheuwel when they spotted a man who started running when he saw the police vehicle.

While running he dropped something on the ground and ran into a yard in Juniper Street. Police followed him and recovered the dropped items which turned out to be a .38 Special revolver firearm with 27 rounds of .38 Specia ammunition and 28 rounds of 9mm ammunition. He was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Once charged he will appear in the Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s court.
