Sukses vir Operasie Lockdown

MISDAADTONEEL: Athlone, Kaapstad: Lede van die Suid-Afrikaanse Polisiediens (SAPD) verbonde aan Operasie Lockdown het twee verdagtes in afsonderlike voorvalle gearresteer. Die voorvalle het Donderdag 14 Mei 2026 en Vrydag 15 Mei 2026 plaasgevind.

Die polisie het omstreeks 17:30 in Athlone operasies uitgevoer en ‘n aantal persele deursoek. By ‘n huis in Sysamoreweg het hulle ‘n 40-jarige man met 31 Mandrax-tablette en twee halwe Mandrax-tablette in sy besit gevang.

KHAYELITSHA: Omstreeks 00:20 op Vrydag 15 Mei 2026 het die Operasie Lockdown-lede 116 rondtes ammunisie in Kamastraat, Site C, ontdek en ‘n 23-jarige vrou is gearresteer vir die onwettige besit van ammunisie.

CRIME SCENE: Athlone, Cape Town: Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) attached to Operation Lockdown arrested two suspects in separate incidents on Thursday, 14 May 2026 and Friday, 15 May 2026.

 The members were conducting intelligence driven operations at around 17:30 in Athlone. They searched a number of premises and in Sysamore Way they hit the jackpot. Here a 40-year-old male suspect was found with 31 Mandrax tablets and two half of Mandrax tablets in his possession.

The suspect was arrested for possession of drugs.

KHAYELITSHA: At around 00:20 on Friday, 15 May 2026 the members discovered 116 rounds of ammunition in Kama Street, Site C and a 23-year-old female suspect was arrested for unlawful possession of ammunition.

Four murder suspects behind bars

CRIME SCENE: Athlone, Cape Town: The South African Police Service (SAPS) arrested four murder suspects in Vygieskraal, Athlone on Thursday, 7 May 2026.

The four were among 34 people arrested in the area in a high density operation.

The Western Cape SAPS management has welcomed the arrests, which came response to heightened criminal activity, said the police in a statement on Friday, 8 May 2026.

The four murder suspects were linked to an incident which happened in April 2026. 

As police continued with their foot patrols, community members pointed out a suspect who was running towards an open field. They gave chase and found the 18-year-old male trying to hide a 9mm pistol and 34 rounds of ammunition. He was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.

Meanwhile, a 26-year-old man was arrested for possession of 250 Mandrax tablets and 50 sachets of Tik.

Police further seized large amounts of alcohol and dagga abandoned at one of the informal houses.

 A total of 28 illegal immigrants were detained for contravention of the Immigration Act.

Lede van die Bishop Lavis-polisie, wat die gebied patrolleer het, het van die skietery gehoor en die voertuig opgemerk, sê die polisie in ‘n verklaring. Hulle het die voertuig agternagesit, maar die verdagtes het daarin geslaag om te voet te ontsnap. Die kar is verlate gevind en ‘n 9mm-pistool is in daarin gevind.

Die voorval het op die hoek van Jakkalsvlei-laan en Kiaatweg plaasgevind.

“Hierdie sinnelose daad kom nadat ons gewaarsku het oor moontlike vergeldingsvoorvalle na gisteraand se moord,” het die wyksraadslid vir Bonteheuwel, Angus McKenzie, Woensdag 6 Mei 2026 in ‘n Facebook-plasing gesê.

Op Dinsdag 5 Mei 2026 is ‘n jongman ook in Bonteheuwel doodgeskiet.

“Laat ons dit duidelik stel, die persoon wat ons vandag verloor het, was nie ‘n bendelid nie, maar ‘n onskuldige mens wat nie verdien het om ‘n slagoffer van hierdie aanhoudende siklus van geweld te word nie.”

Kort na die skietery ,het McKenzie gesê, het hulle geloofwaardige inligting van inwoners en ooggetuies via sy tip-off lyn ontvang.

“Daardie inligting is onmiddellik aan ons veiligheids- en sekuriteitspanne op die grond oorgedra. Hulle het binne minute opgetree. Die verdagtes se voertuig is geïdentifiseer, voorgekeer en deursoek.”

McKenzie het in sy Facebook-plasing gesê ‘n vuurwapen met ammunisie is gevind en verskeie verdagtes, wat aan die verskafde beskrywings voldoen, is aangekeer. Die verdagtes is gearresteer en is na die Bishop Lavis-polisiestasie geneem.

“Vanaand treur ons die verlies van ‘n onskuldige lewe. Gisteraand het ons ook ‘n lewe weens bendegeweld verloor. Maar te midde van hierdie pyn het die krag van die gemeenskap derugekom.”

Two killed, one wounded in shooting

Suspects’ vehicle recovered after murders

UPDATE! According to the police there have been no arrests. Members of the Bishop Lavis police, who were patrolling in the area, heard about the shooting and spotted the vehicle. They gave chase, but the suspects managed to escape on foot after abandoning the vehicle. A 9mm pistol was found in the car.

CRIME SCENE: Bonteheuwel, Cape Town: Swift action by the community and law enforcement saw police recover the suspects’ vehicle shortly after two people were killed and one wounded in a drive-by shooting incident in Bonteheuwel this evening, Wednesday, 6 May 2026.

The incident happened on the corner of Jakkalsvlei Avenue and Kiaat Way.

“This senseless act of violence comes in the wake of the warnings we issued regarding possible retaliation following last night’s killing,” said the ward councillor for Bonteheuwel, Angus McKenzie in a Facebook post this evening.

On Tuesday, 5 May 2026 a young man was also shot and killed in Bonteheuwel.

“Let us be clear the life lost today was not a gang member, but an innocent individual who did not deserve to become a victim of this ongoing cycle of violence.”

Shortly after the shooting, McKenzie said they received strong, credible information from residents and eyewitnesses via his tip-off line.

“That information was immediately relayed to our safety and security teams on the ground. Within minutes, they acted. The suspects’ vehicle was identified, stopped, and searched.”

McKenzie said in his Facebook post a” firearm with ammunition was recovered, and multiple suspects matching the provided descriptions were apprehended. All suspects have been arrested and will be processed at Bishop Lavis Police Station.

“Tonight, we mourn the loss of an innocent life. Last night, a life was also lost to gang violence. But in the midst of this pain, the power of community stood firm.”

He later said that the vehicle used in Wednesday evening’s shooting was confirmed hijacked a few days ago in Bridgetown, Athlone.

The suspects had changed the number plates.


More than 50 arrested in short period

Drunk drivers keep officers busy

The City of Cape Town’s enforcement agencies were kept extremely busy over the week ending 3 May 2026, making 374 arrests over the period.

More than 50 of these were for driving under the influence of alcohol, a major headache on local roads.

An operation against illegal street racing in Bellville South on Sunday night, 3 May 2026 resulted in the arrest of seven people, including two drivers who were intercepted while taking part the race.

The traffic service’s Ghost and Random Breath Testing Units disrupted an illegal gathering in Bellville South also arrested five other motorists at the same event for driving under the influence as a crowd of about 500 people dispersed following the officers’ arrival, the City said in a statement.

“I want to commend the officers for their swift action in breaking up this gathering, but the reality is that these illegal actions are commonplace and a source of frustration and danger to surrounding communities and other road users,” said the Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith.

In other operations traffic officers recorded 60 arrests – 52 were for driving under the influence of alcohol, five for reckless and negligent driving and three for other offences.

The officers also impounded 142 public transport vehicles and executed 645 warrants of arrest.

Metro police officers made 110 arrests and issued 5 367 traffic and by-law fines.

On Wednesday, 29 April 2026, a CCTV operator spotted a suspect handling a firearm and placing it in a backpack. Metro police were dispatched to investigate and on searching the suspect, they recovered an imitation firearm. The 26-year-old was detained at Grassy Park SAPS.

On the same day, officers recovered another imitation firearm, one live round of ammunition and a small amount of Mandrax and Cocaine after responding to reports of shots being fired in Vlei Road in Belgravia. A 34-year-old male was arrested and detained at Athlone SAPS.

The Anti-Hijacking Unit, meanwhile, recovered at least six vehicles over the long weekend. Two stolen vehicles were found stripped in an informal settlement in Philippi; a third was recovered along Edinburgh Drive in Bishop’s Court and three others in Khayelitsha and Mfuleni.

Law enforcement officers made 204 arrests and issued 8 685 notices during weekly operations.

LEAP officers recovered two firearms. In Manenberg, a 37-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday, 29 April 2026 for possession of a prohibited firearm and on Saturday, 2 May 2026, officers in Gugulethu arrested a 28-year-old for the possession of a prohibited firearm and 14 rounds of ammunition.

The Public Emergency Communication Centre recorded 1 638 calls for assistance this past weekend. Of the calls received 86 were physical assault , 39 for domestic violence, 224 noise nuisance complaints and 18 complaints about drinking and fighting in public, said the statement.

City condemns attack on its officers

CRIME SCENE: Athlone, Cape Town: The City of Cape Town has condemned an attack on metro police officers after residents pelted the law enforcers with stones during the arrest of a shooting suspect on Sunday April 12.

The Officers had responded to reports of gunfire at The Vlei informal settlement and arrested a suspect with a 9mm Ruger pistol and 18 rounds of ammunition. But the scene soon turned ugly when community members damaged two patrol cars by stoning them.

The City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith said the suspect was taken to the police station but the damaged vehicles must now be repaired, stressing that such violence against law enforcement undermines efforts to create safer communities.

▪Data shows attacks on metro police staff have risen, with 52 incidents recorded between July 2025 and January 2026 compared to 43 the previous year.
